Today’s prompt asks, “What’s your ideal scenario? Bring your vision to life by creating a drawing or collage of pictures.”
I’m a little bit uncomfortable with things that don’t line up neatly, and a collage definitely falls into that category, so I’ve made it a practice to never put together a collage…ever. But, I can definitely get into visualization as I imagine the ideal scenario for my future.
What I see and feel in my ideal scenario
It’s 5 years from now. A treatment has been formulated to cure lung cancer and reverse the negative effects that living with and treating cancer have on a person. So my husband is still with me, better than ever.
We are empty nesting! Our children are grown. Summer is married and has 1.5 kids, going on 4. We love having the grandchildren over each Friday night. Sam is finishing up her master’s degree in biomedical engineering and law. Yes, she’s an overachiever and has double majored. She plans to work for the FDA. Emily is finishing up her degree in Library and Information Sciences. She is moving to Washington DC where she will work with the Library of Congress. So my family is good. I start there as I imagine the ideal scenario because they are what are most important to me.
In my ideal scenario, I’ve completed my entire Facing Cancer book series and I’m now writing my 2nd mystery novel. My first hit the best seller list—can you believe it?
How I achieved this success
With the kids gone and Dan feeling better, I’ve had plenty of time to work. That’s exactly what I do. I wake up early each morning and go for a walk with my husband. This movement enhances my creativity. Then I return to my desk where I write until noon. Dan and I have lunch and share how our morning has gone. Then it’s back to the grind until 2 pm. This schedule is how I can be so prolific. All of the most successful writers swear by it: BIS (Butt in Seat) I’m sure that’s the wrong acronym, but you get the idea.
As far as what people are saying in my ideal scenario
In my ideal scenario, I don’t really know and I don’t really care. This is my ideal scenario. Right now in my, “not-ideal” scenario, I care a bit too much about what people say. I really need to find a way to let go of that. One thing that does matter, though is that people are reading my books and they are making an impact. I think that’s why we write. It’s our way of changing the world around us.

April 10, 2019 at 5:18 pmMy ideal scenario is the life I am now living, sans one important glitch that you mentioned in your post today, Heather. Stop caring about what other people say (about a writing project or published book) if the comments are not beneficial to the topic at hand. A hard lesson to incorporate into real life.

I think it is difficult for many writers because of the personal investment we put into our writing. If I could stop caring (about what people think of my writing), I think I would be more content. Something to work on…
